TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION DONE RIGHT
You should have seen it. We started working with a new client and all we wanted to do was get set up to manage their Facebook account. It took a week. An entire week just to get access to their Facebook page! The culprit? Two-factor authentication.
We know, two-factor authentication is more safe and secure... blah, blah, blah.
You still can't convince us to like it. We’ve had our fair share of issues with it, and we regularly hear from business associates that it’s causing trouble for them, too.
Are you signed up for two-factor authentication for your social media, website, email marketing tools, etc? It may be holding back your business.
How so? Two-factor authentication prevents members of your team and critical vendors from accessing the tools they need.
The pursuit of access gets more complicated and time-consuming than many people realize. It often starts out simple - someone types in the official password and then they reach the screen where it says "We've sent a 6-digit code to" a phone number or email. Easy, right?
That's when the games begin. Who's phone number is that? What email is that? Does that email even exist anymore? Oh no, it belonged to the temp your company hired three years ago. Wait, that's Brenda's phone number, phew! Oh no, again. Brenda is on vacation and can't send us the verification code. Nah, Brenda never logs off, she's sending it to us! Shoot... it timed out. Please send us another code. And… now we've lost Brenda to the swim-up bar. Guess we'll try again when she's back.
As much of a hassle as it is, and as much as we complain about it, we do appreciate that two-factor authentication adds a layer of security. There are also a lot of programs that force you to set it up in order to finish creating your account. Here are some tips to make it better if you do choose to use it:
Use your main office line and your info@ email address to receive notifications. Don’t use poor Brenda’s phone number. She shouldn’t be on call on vacation if someone needs to access Facebook. Also, what will you do if she quits?
Add another user to your accounts to keep them secure and not cause a nightmare for your marketing team.
If you require people to get a code to access certain platforms regularly, use a code generator people can download to their devices. That way they don’t have to depend on a central person to distribute codes.
The best course is to set up any and all marketing accounts and services right from the start. That will save you time later when you’re ready to outsource your marketing and communications efforts. Not quite sure where to start? Send us an email at hello@rbcollaborative.com to chat.
