TAKE TIME OFF AND TRY NEW THINGS TO BE A BETTER BUSINESS OWNER
As a business owner, when’s the last time you took some time for yourself and tried something new?
If you can’t remember, now’s the time! Real vacations (and weekends) are vital to maintaining motivation. Taking quality time off, really getting away from work and doing the things you love, is absolutely vital to your health and success.
Taking time off is also important to stay productive. In fact, studies show that people who don’t get sufficient leisure time goof off more at work, especially if they’re working on days traditionally viewed as days off like holidays or weekends. This undermines one of the most important factors that determines whether people will persist in their work - intrinsic motivation.
It’s a common misperception that business owners, people who love and feel deeply connected to their work, don’t need to take time off. However, increasing evidence points toward the benefits of taking time off for all of us! And it’s not just vacations; it’s just as important to make space for small breaks and moments to disconnect from work.
You can supercharge those times away from work by embracing new things and experiences. It’s good for you and for your business.
New experiences make you more adaptable. You’ll see that there is more than one way to accomplish a goal, and you’ll be less thrown off if an idea fails. Failure is part of entrepreneurship, and having a history of trying (and potentially failing at) new things will help you learn from your failures and move on rather than give up.
It helps you connect with people. You are more apt to have something in common with someone you meet and know what questions to ask about an interest of theirs. It also makes you more interesting and can be the key to building rapport with potential clients.
New experiences inspire us. Routine is necessary, but think about how different your perspective is after trying something new. Inspiration incites desire, persistence, and creativity.
Trying something new forces you outside of your comfort zone and into the growth zone. You’ll be calmer around problems and issues because you will have developed a bigger perspective.
But we know, leaving your business behind for a week’s vacation or even just an afternoon hiking a new trail, is tough! Who will do everything? What if something goes wrong?
With a little planning, you can feel good about taking some much needed time to yourself.
Here’s the secret:
Create a plan. Bonus points if that plan can be executed by more than one person.
Hire enough people and train them properly.
Delegate tasks (we know, the d-word… do it anyway!)
Trust the people you’ve hired. You hired them for a reason!
With all the things you have to plan for as a small business owner, keeping your marketing and communications plan on track shouldn’t have to be one of them. That’s where we come in! We can help you create and execute a plan from scratch, or step and take over management of processes and plans you already have in place! If you could use a little break, send us an email at hello@rbcollaborative.com.
